This week, hundreds of Angelenos gathered at Zuma beach to celebrate their underwater parks. The Los Angeles Marine Protected Area Collaborative, which includes Wishtoyo Foundation (and its Ventura Coastkeeper Program) and Los Angeles Waterkeeper, held its first-ever “Honor the Ocean” event. The celebration began with a ceremonial blessing from Chumash elder and Wishtoyo Foundation executive director Mati Waiya that recognized the history of indigenous maritime people, followed by the rare opportunity to see a tomol (Chumash redwood planked and sewn canoe). Storytelling, surf lessons, and other marine programs rounded out the fun and educational day at the beach.
