July 25th is Swimmable California Day! A day proclaimed by the California Legislature to recognize every Californians’ right to waterways and beaches that are clean and safe to enjoy. Wherever you are, we invite you to get out and swim, surf, stand-up paddle, kayak, dive, canoe, float, and frolic!
Your local Waterkeepers will be celebrating too – here’s how you can join the movement for clean water across the state over the next two weeks:
- 📅Saturday, July 19:
- 📍Los Angeles | Help clean up the LA River with Los Angeles Waterkeeper at North Atwater Park.
- 📅Thursday, July 24:
- 📍Orange County | Join Orange County Coastkeeper for a beach cleanup at Sunset Beach followed by a beer social at Green Cheek Beer Co.
- 📅Friday, July 25:
- 📍Monterey County | Clean up Carmel River State Beach from 2-5pm with Monterey Waterkeeper.
- 📍Sonoma County | Russian Riverkeeper staff and partners will be paddling and cleaning up the lower Russian River. While this is not a public event – head out to the river and say hello if you see them on the water.
- 📍Santa Barbara | Santa Barbara Channelkeeper invites you to take action with a DIY trash cleanup – bring a bag and gloves to your favorite swimming spot, snap a photo of your efforts, and share on social media with #SwimmableCA and #ProtectCAWater to inspire others.
- 📅Saturday & Sunday, July 26-27:
- 📍Nevada County | South Yuba River Citizens League River Ambassadors will be posted at two Yuba River crossings on State Park land: Bridgeport and Highway 49. Make a trip to your favorite spot along the river and learn more about Swimmable CA Day and how you can help preserve the South Yuba River.
However you celebrate, please remember to recreate responsibly and pack out what you bring in. Happy Swimmable California Day!
