WHAT: Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer travel—and an influx of litter that finds its way into California’s ocean, rivers and bays. California Coastkeeper Alliance (CCKA) offers five tips to reduce litter in California’s waters this Memorial Day at www.cacoastkeeper.org.

WHY: CCKA says the weekend highlights the need for a statewide trash policy to prevent litter from polluting California’s waters. California’s State Water Resources Control Board is developing a statewide policy that declares a goal of zero trash present in the state’s ocean, bays, and surface waters. It follows the City of Los Angeles’ model, which stops over one million pounds of trash from reaching Southern California waters every year. Under the policy, local governments will be able to choose from a variety of strategies to prevent trash from reaching the state’s waters including trash-catching devices on storm drains and street sweeping.

WHERE: Beaches across the state. California Waterkeepers are available for interviews in San Diego, Orange County, Inland Empire, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, San Francisco, Sonoma, and Humboldt. CCKA is available for in-person interviews in San Francisco or via phone.

WHEN: Memorial Day Weekend (May 24 – 27). Call or email to arrange an interview.
